Wax Series
1996-1999
These two-dimensional illusionistic paintings were begun in 1996. They were designed using the techniques of CAP, an acronym for Computer Aided Painting, to achieve the shapes. The painting medium is beeswax (encaustic) with dry pigment added. The support for each color area is a ¾ inch-deep cut-out segment of birch plywood. The individual color panels are screwed to the plywood backing and beveled back at a 15-degree angle. The encaustic wax surface is delicate, soft, and sensual. For me, they are an aesthetic, ethical, and spiritual quest. Perhaps the best known of all encaustic works are the Fayum funeral portraits painted in the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D. by Greek painters in Egypt. — Ron D.
